Nearly three months in and it’s clear, the Holy Spirit won this year’s papal election.
No one but the Spirit could have led the cardinals to select Jorge Mario Bergoglio as Pope Francis and the worldwide leader of the Catholic Church.
And today the Spirit’s well played hand showed itself again.
During Wednesday’s papal audience which coincided with World Environment Day, Francis lambasted the “culture of waste” that has pervaded global society.
Francis argued that this culture makes the worship of money a new reality.
People, he said, simply become consumer products to be used and thrown out when they are longer economically valuable.
He noted how this era played out in the media. When the stock market goes down ten points, it is a worldwide tragedy. When a suffering person dies, it is not newsworthy. It is the new norm.
