Bishop Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst, the ‘Bling Bishop’ of Limburg, has been suspended from his duties, after allegedly spending millions to renovate his official residence, in addition to his general tendency to stay flossed out.
Earlier this week, Pope Francis strongly denounced greed, perhaps in a harbinger of things to come for the bishop. This message has been a central theme of Pope Francis’ papacy: the desire to be a church of and for the poor. The suspension of the Bling Bishop shows that this theme will not be merely rhetorical.
