More big news from Rome today.
According to a senior Vatican official, martyred Salvadoran bishop Oscar Romero will soon join the Church’s official canon of saints.
During a homily yesterday, Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia–who is in charge of Romero’s cause for canonization–announced that Pope Francis had “unblocked” Romero’s path to sainthood.
Romero’s cause for canonization had been held up for decades due to his association with liberation theology.
This association didn’t seem to bother the first pope from the New World, whose decision to advance Romero’s cause will be received with great joy in El Salvador, where the bishop”s life is remembered with great fervor and fanfare by the faithful.
