Our Desire to Be Seen and the Source of Another Person’s Gratitude

Fr. Paddy Gilger, SJ: There are huge changes that social contexts put on us as human persons. But beneath those changes, beneath the impact that our widely variant cultures have on us as human beings, there is something universal inside of us as human beings longing to come out. And I think one of the major things that’s longing to come out is the longing to be seen, recognized, attended to. What that really means is loved, or let me put it this way, what everybody who wants to be seen…what they are actually asking for is someone to help them know that they belong in the world…someone who can help them know that they are worth being thankful for. And they are, it’s great.
